Harnessing renewable energy to sustain people, plants, and progress
Maya Mountain Research Farm (MMRF) has been powered by the sun for more than three decades. Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond agriculture and ecosystem restoration — it also includes the way we generate and use energy. By relying entirely on solar power, we reduce our carbon footprint, minimize reliance on imported fuels, and demonstrate practical solutions for energy independence in rural Belize.
The farm’s solar energy system provides electricity for classrooms, dormitories, the office, and various research and processing facilities. Over the years, our solar infrastructure has evolved from a small, experimental setup into a robust off-grid system capable of meeting all of our daily power needs. This transition has allowed us to maintain reliable energy for refrigeration, lighting, communication, and equipment — all essential to supporting the diverse activities that happen on-site every day.
Solar energy not only supports our operational needs but also serves as a living example for visitors, interns, and students. We regularly share our experiences with solar design, maintenance, and energy efficiency, encouraging others to adopt renewable solutions in their own communities.
Through this long-term investment in solar power, MMRF demonstrates that sustainable living is achievable and replicable — even in remote areas. By working with, rather than against, natural systems, we show how renewable energy and regenerative agriculture can work hand in hand to create a resilient future for people and the planet.
