Food security through biodiversity

 

Groups, Researchers, Interns and Visitors:


MMRF is an experiential learning center. Visitors come here to attend courses, do personal research, intern with us for a week or a semester, or just visit for a day or two. All visitors stay in dorms and eat family-style meals with everyone on the farm.


If you are interested in being an intern or doing research at MMRF, please send us a letter of introduction, and a resume. Tell us what you would like to get out of your time at MMRF, and how long you would like to stay.


MMRF will work with your university to help you get credit for your time here.


Groups: We also host groups from universities and other organizations. If you are interested in bringing a group here, please contact us. We can tailor make a curriculum with you before your arrival that caters to your group's particular interests.


Interns: If you have 2 weeks or more to stay, and are interested in learning experientially about permaculture and sustainable tropical agriculture, you can be an intern. You will be taught about the various systems and activities on the farm, and participate in the day-to-day running of the farm and project. These are the sorts of activities you might expect to join in:


* Reforestation of fire damaged areas

  2. *Assisting Red Cross prepare food grown at MMRF for weekly elderly feeding program

  3. *Agroforestry maintenance and expansion

  4. *Establishing tree nurseries in local communities

* Plant trials

* Workshop facilitation

* Food harvesting

* Poultry management

* Post-harvest processing

* Kitchen assistance

* Construction

  1. *Vanilla data collection


If you would like to stay more than one month as an intern, you will still participate in the day to day running of the farm and project, but if you like we can also arrange a personal project with you. This project would take into account both your interests and skills and also the needs of the organization. Once set up, it would be largely self-directed.


Volunteers pay $175 U.S. for the week, or $600 for the month


Researchers: Researchers can come for as long as they want to. Researchers tend to be self directed, although they can choose to be involved in MMRF’s farm activities. Among many other topics, MMRF offers an excellent base for researchers to study:


    * Agriculture

    * Agroforestry

    * Botany and Ethnobotany

    * Biology

    * Environmental Studies

    * Permaculture

    * Riparian zone issues

    * Tropical ecology

    * River ecology

    * Ornithology

    * Appropriate technology

    * Ecological restoration of fire damaged areas


MMRF can accommodate researchers and visitors on a daily, weekly or monthly basis.


Visitors pay $40 per day, $175 a week or $600 for the month, which covers room and board. We much prefer week long visits to less than a full week visits.



Note: MMRF's satellite internet powered by renewable energy is available at certain hours of the day, dependent on battery state of charge. Free internet is available to anyone staying at MMRF with their own wireless equipped laptop. MMRF has a loaner laptop, which is available.
